MEC Dikeledi Mahlangu must explain why she overruled her HOD’s decision to
dismiss an employee who found guilty of falsifying his qualifications and
misusing government vehicles.
According to reports, Mr Menzi
Khumalo found guilty of a number of offences and he dismissed in March 2013.
However, after following an appeal process, he reinstated in October 2013.
While no details of his appeal are
available, the evidence related to his conduct and qualifications are damning.
Correspondence between HOD Kgopane Mohlasedi and former Director-General Jacob
Rabodila showed how Mr Khumalo:
falsified
his qualifications, was responsible for the loss of millions
through fruitless and wasteful expenditure, his
conduct brought the department into dispute, and he misused
government vehicles.
Furthermore, HOD Mohlasedi requested a forensic investigation intothe
finances of the cost centre, and to charge any officials concerned. He also
requested the department to report possible fraud and corruption charges with
the Hawks or SIU relating to Mr Khumalo’s purchase of three properties in
Umjindini.
The MEC’s decision to reinstate Mr
Khumalo is absurd, and clearly shows her misusing her position to undermine the
interest of the state and public.
To this end the DA will write to
the MEC, demanding she make public her reasons for reinstating Mr Khumalo. We
will also write to the Public Service Commission and the Office of the
Premier’s Integrity Management Unit to investigate the matter.
The DA will continue with our pressure until Mr
Khumalo removed from office and the investigations into the matter are concluded
