REMARKS BY MEC FOR FINANCE, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND TOURISM ON THE OCCASION OF RECEIVING OF THE MAIN PRIZE FOR FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN

Letters known to be intimate part of engagement between the sender and receiver. However, there are some letters whose content unconventional, you found yourself tempted to share. I guess these are letters that written with a view to let the whole world into the thinking of some of the greatest minds in the world. Let me start my input by referring to a letter that Karl Marx wrote to his father Heinrich in 1837, in which he said:

“History calls those men [and women] the greatest who have ennobled themselves by working for the common good;

Experience acclaims as happiest the man who has made the greatest number of people happy”.

We converge here today, to request all our people to retrace the steps of greatness that comes with being the “change makers” in our communities.

Like the call made by Karl Marx centuries ago, we send the plea to men and women of our province to join us in this extra ordinary drive, to pull all hands together for the happiness of the greatest number of people.

We are making a passionate request to the sons and daughters of this part of the world, to rise to the occasion and give meaning to the objective of ensuring sustainable livelihoods for others.

The father of our nation, Nelson Mandela left us with a powerful message of continuing the legacy of a caring nation. He said it is in our hands to make a difference in the lives of others. Together with many of our great leaders, he inspired us with his passion for the concepts of nation building and the world in peace with itself.

It is in the same spirit that, today, we stand in front of you, to kick start the three months fundraising drive to raise funds for our social responsibility programmes. This campaign starts a process of building the blocks towards decent homes for four needy families within this community this financial year.

The government has adopted the theme “Together We Move South Africa Forward”.
We are aware that government alone cannot succeed in building sustainable homes, at the pace that we want, for a great majority of our people who are desperate to feel and experience truest community life. Hence this earnest calls for Government, Business, Labour Organizations and Civil Society at large to heed to this call so together we can Move Mpumalanga Forward.

The Department of Finance tasked with a responsibility to harness the public and private sector experience and expertise in order to drive the programmes as set out in the National Development Plan.

We believe that new forms of partnerships developed for the good of the greater majority those who are trapped by the triple challenges of unemployment, poverty and inequality.

On the 31st of July 2014, we announced a partnership with the Big Five Harley Davidson Group. The Mpumalanga Department of Finance/Big Five Harley Davidson Change Maker Raffle for Community Development formed to start a new campaign of raising funds to deliver homes that will appease our eyes and bring comfort to the needy beneficiaries.

Since then many partners have agreed to share their skills and expertise in support of the noble objective of the social responsibility task. Together, these institutions will assist the Department to deliver credible and incident-free fundraising campaign.

The partner institutions are:

·        Mpumalanga Gambling Board will provide technical support and the raffle machines for the draw;
·        PriceWaterhouse Coopers will oversee the ticketing and draw processes;
·        Standard Bank will host the account for the campaign; and
·        White River Printers is providing printing work for the material that be published including the tickets.

I am also proud to announce that the Nelson Mandela Foundation supports this campaign.

We truly humbled by the generosity and willingness of all the partners who agreed to travel this journey with us.

We appeal to other corporate citizens to partner with us for the good of the society. Together, we wield a massive power to take Mpumalanga Forward, house by house and community by community.

The department will also welcome pledges from the Business sector to help us touch the lives of the less fortunate in our own way.

Prizes

There is no prize bigger than “the greatest number of people happy”.
·        Every entry will buy a brick.
·        Every Rand will buy a bag of cement.
·        Every step one take to go and purchase a ticket will start a compassion fire that will warm the heart of the four families, forever.

I am glad to announce that the Big Five Harley Davidson has agreed to put a Harley Davidson 2014 Sportster XL883l as the first prize for the 2014 raffle. Additionally, the winner will take home a riding gear and ten riding lessons worth R115 000 courtesy of the group.

Other prizes are as follows:

    Second prize: R20 000
    Third prize: R10 000
    Fourth prize: R 2 x 5000
    Plus ten (10) lucky winners will each get R1 000

All these prizes are possible for a ticket of only R100.00

Together with the Big Five Harley Davidson Group Bikers, the Department will host roadshows in various parts of the Province to raise awareness about the campaign. The details will follow soon.

This is indeed interesting times for the Department and all the officials. We hope to enlighten the hearts of those who will be chosen to benefit from this campaign and also others that will follow in the next five years. We want them to experience a different Treasury. This is our attempt at expanding our horizons through making a direct contribution in support of the societal responsibility of providing for the less privileged members of the communities.

Let me conclude by recalling the words of the greatest statesman, Dr Nelson Mandela when he said:

“What count in life is not the mere fact that we have lived; it is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”
