DA commends MEC Kholwane’s MEGA shake-up

DA commends MEC Kholwane’s MEGA shake-up

The DA commends MEC Kholwane and the Department for the decision to remove the Bulk Water Infrastructure mandate from MEGA.

The DA has long questioned the rational for awarding such a vital objective to an entity that is in total disarray.  The entit plagued by maladministration and has constant and numerous adverse findings against it by the Auditor General.  With this new development the DA has submitted parliamentary questions to the Department to ascertain the way forward in terms of Bulk Water Infrastructure in the province.

Furthermore, these questions will seek to clarity on what role Rand Water will now play in the Bulk Water Infrastructure as well as the financial implications for the various municipalities involved in these projects.  The DA would also like to look into what will happen to the contractors whose completion is under 80% as it has been reported that those over 80% will be transferred to Rand Water.

The DA is pleased that the MEC has finally taken action and removed Adv Boyce Mkhize, CEO of MEGA, a step that the DA has been calling for since his appointment.  The DA will engage with the Department to ascertain if there any additional new developments that brought about the sudden dismissal of Adv Boyce Mkhize. Just last year the former MEC of this Department expressed her full confidence in his capabilities and that of the entity to deliver on its various mandates, ignoring calls from the DA to remove him from his post.

Once again the question arises of whether Adv Boyce Mkhize will receive another golden handshake for  fired from yet another board.  The MEC must make known whether any settlement agreement was made and at what cost to the taxpayers.

The DA supports the actions already taken by MEC Kholwane, and hope that with him at the realm, MEGA will finally realise its full potential and deliver on its important mandates of Provincial Economic Development.
