the legislature to increase public engagement in order to avoid disconnect with
the public.
Speaker Shongwe
further said that the legislature's main function is oversight over the
Executive. Shongwe says it is important to ensure that oversight mechanism strengthened
and that public participation is highly entrenched in the Legislature and
communities.
Speaker referred
to the National Development Plan quoting that its emphasise that citizens have
the right to expect government to deliver certain basic services and hold
leaders accountable for their action, and the work of the legislature is to
assist this by conducting oversight and hold the Executive (government)
accountable
