Raw sewage is spewing from pipes in Del Judor
Ext 4 in the Emalahleni district, running into a quarry and then directly into the Olifant’s River.
The DA is concerned about the harm that already
been caused to the eco system and the effects that the continued spillage will have on the Olifants River
and all the residents and animals using this water on a daily basis. As we speak the raw sewerage is still in
full flow and everything being polluted downstream.
The current
administration doesn’t seem to have the ability or capacity to deal with this
terrible health hazard
or they are simply not
concerned about polluting the environment or the scarcity of water
resources. The potential for a major
outbreak of gastro intestinal infections is increasing rapidly. Large raw
sewerage spillages such as
these have devastating consequences for residents and the environment and be
accepted.
The DA will write to
the MEC of Co-Operative Governance, Refilwe Mtsweni, and request her to intervene
as a matter of urgency to
ensure that the sewerage network fixed and maintained on an on-going basis.
Furthermore, the DA
will be laying charges against the Municipality at the SAPS and submitting a
complaint for human rights violation
to the HRC to ensure that this situation is not only contained, but that the
necessary steps are taken to
ensure this never happens again. It cannot be right to expect residents to live
with raw sewer
spillage such as this on a
daily basis.
