SHOOTING INCIDENTS IN EVANDER, CAUSE OF CONCERN

SHOOTING INCIDENTS IN EVANDER, CAUSE OF CONCERN

Evander – The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thulani Ntobela is fuming about the shooting incidents that continue to occur in the old mines at Evander near Secunda as a result of illegal mining.

Last week a shooting was reported at Winkelhaak Mine that claimed a life of a Lesotho national’s 18 year old Sanele Mokane, five others were wounded and hospitalised. As a result of this incident, the police conducted an intelligent driven sting operation on 15 July 2014, wherein 104 illegal miners believed to be from Lesotho, Zimbabwe and Mozambique aged between 18 and 45 arrested. The suspects have appeared before the Evander Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 16 July 2014. All the suspects remanded in custody and are appearing today and tomorrow respectively.

On Sunday 20 July 2014, police attended to another complaint of shooting at the same mine, where they found a man who identified yet, lying in a pool of blood. He certified dead by paramedics at the scene.

On Saturday 19 July 2014, approximate 07:00, police received information that six people wounded and hospitalised. Three of them said to be critical but stable and the other three were treated and discharged the same day.

In both incidents, it’s alleged that a rival group shot the victims after a squabble broke while they were involved in illegal mining.

The Provincial Commissioner and the management strongly condemn this unnecessary loss of life occurring as a result of illegal mining.
“We will continue with operations to stop these illegal mining activities. We are appealing to the neighbouring communities to assist us in identifying these illegal miners so we can put them behind bars,” said Lt General Ntobela.
