Agang SA to visit Afrika Tikkun's purpose-built centres in Gauteng

By BRIAN KAJENGO

Mamphela Ramphele will be visiting Afrika Tikkun's Centre of Excellence in Alexandra on Thursday March 20 from 8am – 9.30am

Afrika Tikkun focuses on empowering the next generation of South Africans by providing essential services that strengthen families and develop children from “Cradle to Career”. Afrika Tikkun's purpose-built centres in Gauteng and the Western Cape focus on early childhood development, child and youth development, nutrition and food security, primary health care, family support services, children with disabilities and enterprise and skills development.

The leader of Agang SA will visit The Phuthaditjaba Community Centre in Alex that opened in March 2011. She will meet the centre manager, volunteers and staff who all come from the township, before looking around the centre, its library, computer, sports and art facilities.

The Child Youth Centre houses a modern Early Childhood Development (ECD) centre for 200 children, while an after-school and youth development programme offers access to online information for improved learning opportunities.

Empowerment is one of Agang SA's five Es of its election manifesto – including education, entrepreneurship, effective government and employment.

"Empowerment needs to be turned on its head.  We have spent 20 years auditing outputs via scorecards, with little attention to inputs – ie. Good schooling, safe communities and effective government. Afrika Tikkun empowers communities to develop new generations of productive citizens – a great example of what we need to achieve across the entire country,” said Mamphela Ramphele
