Mbombela
municipality continues its failure to deliver water to Hazyview
DA Mpumalanga says Mbombela municipality must urgently address the
appalling state of water and sanitation delivery in Hazyview.
Since January this year, Numbi Park in Hazyview affected by at
least 63 interruptions to its water supply without prior notification to
residents or councillors. These interruptions sometimes last up to four days
without any intervention in the form of water tanks from the municipality. When
the water finally returns it is dirty and unusable posing an even greater
problem for residents.
Some residents have resorted to helping the municipal staff
replace burned out pumps and found that staff has been installing the pumps
incorrectly. They have tried numerous times to notify the municipality’s
technicians and supervisors of the situation but all attempts have proved
fruitless.
In some instances, residents of Hazyview forced to buy bottled
water in order to perform their day to day activities but for many, buying
bottled water is expensive and unsustainable.
In February this year, the DA submitted written questions to
former executive mayor, Cathy Dlamini, requesting information pertinent to
maintenance costs and schedules directed at the water and sanitation
department. We also asked questions about expenditure in this department
and for the plans the municipality had for Hazyview’s water. These questions
went unanswered even though they were supposed to answer within 14 days.
We will now ask newly appointed executive mayor, Cllr Sibusiso
Mathonsi and the acting municipal manager Sello Ditshego to establish an Ad Hoc
committee and immediately investigate the real reason for the poor service
delivery and lack of accountability from the water and sanitation
department.
Water in one of the most basic necessities of life and the DA will
not allow the municipality to deny its residents access to clean water as
enshrined in the Constitution.
