Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe calls for motorists to
pay their outstanding traffic fines or face arrest.
This comes
after traffic officers arrested 61 motorists last week between 26 and 31 May
2014 during day to day patrols and operations.
55 of these
motorists arrested for failing to pay their traffic fines while others arrested
for excessive speed, overloading and using false documentation.
Shongwe says
traffic officers will not turn a blind eye on motorists who break the law and
then fail to pay their fines.
“This shows
that some motorists do not take the law seriously and these are the same people
who continue to break the law. If they can’t pay their fines, then they must be
imprisoned so that they realize that we mean business,” said Shongwe.
During the
operations, traffic officers also issued 4486 fines for different violations
including speeding, overloading, driving vehicles with worn out tires and
overtaking on barrier line.
