Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Mr. Vusi Shongwe called for in depth investigation into the collision that claimed the lives of two people today on D2296 Road between Kanyamazane and Mbombela near Tekwane South. The collision occurred when cash in transit armored vehicle lost control before colliding with a train bus.

This happened few days another accident took place along R40, and another bus involved in an accident claim one learner’s life.

The bus veered off the road shortly after collision and landed on an embankment. It is alleged that the driver of the cash in transit vehicle lost control as the bonnet opened making it impossible for the driver to see the road.

Shongwe says an in-depth investigation would be able to determine if the cash in transit vehicle was road worthy at the time of the accident and this would assist in determining whether the owners of the vehicle should be criminally charged or not. According to Shongwe the investigations should also confirm the allegations that the cash in transit vehicle’s bonnet was locked using steel wires.

“The police should not leave any stone unturned when investigating the accident. Those who are responsible, including owners of the vehicles involved, must face the consequences. We cannot afford to have other people’s negligence turning our roads into killing fields. It is the responsibility of every business person to ensure that vehicles that they are using to transport any goods or people are road worthy at all times,” Shongwe said.

Sixteen people sustained serious injuries. 97 people were slightly injured. The victims were admitted at Robs Ferreira and Medi-Clinic hospitals in Mbombela.

MEC Shongwe is sending condolences to the bereaved families and has also wished those who were injured a speedy recovery.
