IPID must investigate police’s use of live ammunition in Barberton

By       BRIAN KAJENGO

The DA absolutely condemns allegations of police using live ammunition to quell a protest in Emjindini Trust near Barberton, and calls on the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) to investigate.

According to reports, residents blockaded access to the trust early this morning, allegedly over the municipality’s failure to address their service delivery demands.

It further alleged that the police’s Tactical Response Team used live ammunition to quell the unrest, seriously injuring one person, who reportedly rushed to hospital with a ripped open abdomen.

Despite police claims to the contrary, it has reported that empty cartridge cases found on the scene.

This is yet another incident in what is fast becoming a national crisis, and all incidences of police brutality condemned in the strongest possible terms, and those responsible held to account.

Police mandated to protect the people of Mpumalanga, and have no right to carry out a reign of fear.
