DA welcomes IPID investigation into Barberton shootings

DA welcomes IPID investigation into Barberton shootings

The DA welcomes the announcement by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) that it would investigate allegations of police using live ammunition against protestors in Barberton last week.

According to reports, IPID will investigate charges of discharging a firearm in public, and it escalated to attempted murder following the incident last Wednesday, where one protester seriously wounded and hospitalised last Wednesday.

While we welcome the fact that that investigators are searching for cartridges and projectiles on the scene, we are concerned over the time lapse since the incident, and the very real possibility of the scene compromised.

To this end, the DA calls on every member of the public who may have information that could assist with this investigation, to come forward, so that the perpetrators brought to book.

It is the duty of police to protect and uphold the rights of the country’s citizens, and any intolerance nipped in the bud.
