Road Accident Traffic Awareness starts

October is Public Transport Month. The Road Traffic Management Corporation in collaboration with Mpumalanga department of Community Safety and Security will host learners from all provinces who will be participating in the annual National Road Safety Debates and Participatory Education Techniques (PET) competitions in Mbombela.

The Debates initiated in 2004 after the road crash statistics showed that at least 40% of fatalities involved young people aged between 0-25. Road Safety Debates is therefore dedicated to young road users who travel the roads as pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, novice drivers and passengers.
Meanwhile the PET is aimed at changing learners’ attitudes towards road safety issues, by means of participatory education. It also encourages learners to identify road safety challenges in their own communities and to find solutions by ways of research to the problem thereby providing them with a hands-on opportunity in resolving those challenges. These are projects undertaken in response to the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety objectives to reduce road deaths by 50% in 2020.
The competitions will run from 7 to 10 October 2014 with a prize giving and awards ceremony taking place on 10 October 2014.
The gala dinner will take place on Friday 10 October 2014 at Nutting House Lodge at Mbombela.

The National Transport Minister, Ms. Dipuo Peters, Deputy Transport Minister, Ms. Sindisiwe Chikunga, Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison Mr.  Vusi Shongwe and the RTMC CEO, Advocate Makhosini Msibi will grace the event.
