MAN APPEARS FOR SENSELESS BEATING A GOAT TO DEATH

MAN APPEARS FOR SENSELESS BEATING A GOAT TO DEATH
Tonga - Today, 08 October 2014, Sipho Makamu aged 26, appeared briefly before the Nkomazi Magistrate’s Court on allegations of cruelty to animals.
His appearance came after a video of a goat beaten to death circulating on social media landed on the hands of the police and South African Animal Rescue and Advisory Centre (SAARAC). The police in Tonga and inspectors from SAARAC instituted an investigation regarding the video and it led them to a house at Mzinti near Malelane yesterday, 07 October 2014, where Makamu arrested.
Makamu released on warning and the case postponed to 10 November 2014, pending further investigation.
The police management is pleased with the arrest of Makamu and believe that other community members will learn from the consequences of this senseless conduct. As police, we strongly condemn cruelty to animals and we urge that whenever members of the community witness this kind of cruelty, they must report it to the police, SAARAC or Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).
