KwaMhlanga
– Thursday
2 October 2014, the Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thulani Ntobela
commented the community of Mandela Village in KwaMhlanga for assisting the
police with the arrest of a 24-year-old man in connection with a senseless
murder of a young mother of two.
The
24-year-old woman who has been identified as Sonto Rinkane was ruthlessly
murdered on the night of Saturday, 28 September 2014, by an unknown assailant.
Her children aged three and nine, told the
police that their mother was brutally attacked by an unknown man. The attacker
apparently knocked on the door and immediately after Rinkane opened, he
attacked her. The children ran for their lives to another room where they fell
asleep. When they woke up in the morning, they found their mother’s half naked
body in a pool of blood.
The
older child ran to the neighbors for help and police were called to the scene.
Preliminary investigation suggested that Rinkane might have been strangled to
death. There are also visible injuries on her hands, arms and neck. It was
suspect that the perpetrator might have been injured during the incident as
blood stains were found in one of the windows, at the back of the house as well
as on the fence.
Thursday 02 October 2014, the community spotted a man with injuries and he could
not explain where he sustained them. They then called the police to investigate
as there was an appeal made to look for anyone with suspicious injuries.
When
the police arrived at the scene, the man told them that he sustained the
injuries from falling but he was taken in for further questioning. He later
confessed that he was the one responsible for the murder of Rinkane. The police
also seized tekkies belonging to the suspect with blood stains.
“This
arrest occurred as a result of good relations between the community and police.
I really applaud the community of KwaMhlanga for the sterling job. The murder
of Rinkane and any other murders are a cause for concern for the police and the
community. Incidents of this nature are barbaric, evil and cowardly”, said
Lieutenant General Ntobela.
