MINISTER EDNA MOLEWA TO LAUNCH
THE 2013/14 NATIONAL ENVIRONMENT COMPLIANCE AND ENFORCEMENT REPORT AND THE
UNEP-GEF RHINO PROJECT

The Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs,
Mrs Edna Molewa, will launch the 2013/14 National Environmental Compliance and
Enforcement Report (NECER) in Pretoria
on Wednesday 8
October 2014.
The Minister will also launch the UNEP-GEF Rhino
Project initiated earlier this year.
The objective of the NECER is to provide a
national overview of environmental compliance and enforcement activities
undertaken by relevant institutions across the country during the period 01
April 2013 - 31 March 2014.
The report includes the work of the Environmental
Management Inspectorate (EMI), commonly known as the Green Scorpions. The Green
Scorpions comprises a network of environmental compliance and enforcement
officials from national, provincial and municipal government. The EMIs tasked
with ensuring the implementation of, and adherence to specific pieces of
national environmental legislation.
During
the media briefing the Minister will provide details on the findings of the
report and provide more information on the United Nations Environment Programme
(UNEP)-Global Environment Facility (GEF) Rhino Project aimed at strengthening
the law enforcement capabilities to combat wildlife crime with a specific focus
on rhino.
