MOZAMBICANS AND
SOUTH AFRICANS APPEAR IN COURT FOR DEALING IN ILLICIT CIGARETTES
WITBANK - Five men, two
South African and three Mozambican nationals, appeared before the Witbank
Magistrate’s Court today facing charges of possession and dealing in illicit
cigarettes.
The suspects’ appearance follows a
swift action by the police after they received information regarding a
suspicious illegal transaction that was taking place at a plot in Emalahleni on
Friday, 06 March 2015. The police in Witbank then went into the plot and found
the suspects and five trucks, three from Mozambique and the other two from the
country. The suspects were busy loading boxes from the Mozambican trucks to the
South African ones. When police opened the boxes, they discovered that they
were containing illegal cigarettes to an estimated value of R24 million.
The suspects, Johannes Kotze (46),
Moekotoi Motaung (37), Zeferimo Bandeira (35), Fransisco Nhanombe (46) and
Daudu Saule (57), were nabbed and the cigarettes as well as the trucks seized.
A preliminary investigation suggests that the cigarettes were taken from
Mozambique and were en-route to Cape Town.
The suspects were remanded
in custody until Monday 16 March 2015, pending further investigation.
