DA succeeds in ensuring ratepayers are protected
The decision adopted by the Mbombela Council at its recent sitting to
“ring-fence’’ all electricity payments by consumers in Mbombela, is seen as a
major achievement by the DA.
For years the DA councillors of Mbombela have fought for the principle
that money paid for electricity be used solely for payment to Eskom, with whom
the council is now in areas for over four months.
This decision, simply means that funds collected or allocated for
electricity in Mbombela, will not be spent on anything else, but for paying
Eskom.
This also means that the DA in Mbombela has succeeded in ensuring that
residents will be acknowledged for their payment of services - by ensuring
Council adopts a motion in which electricity tariffs paid by rate payers will
be directed straight to Eskom.
The DA believes that this approach should be adopted across all
municipalities in order to prevent the poor payment of municipalities to Eskom
that is contributing to the chaos the utility is experiencing at the moment.
The party wants the necessary checks to be conducted to ensure
adherence, and we will pressurise the municipality to also address illegal
electricity connections and non-payment of services.
