MURDERER
SENTENCED TO LIFE
MIDDELBURG - Tuesday 28 October 2014, the Circuit of
the Pretoria High Court in Middelburg have handed down a hefty sentence to
Thabang Mohlala, 26 years old, for fatally stabbing Jan Du Toit 59 years old at
that time and robbed his firearm.
The court heard that on the 18th of September 2012 at approximately
04:00, Du Toit awakened by a noise in his house at Kanonkop in Middelburg. He
then took his firearm and went to investigate. According to his wife Maria aged
68, she said Du Toit noticed Mohlala and instructed him to lie down at
gunpoint. He then asked him how many where they in the house.
Mohlala said they were four and Du Toit lost attention against
Mohlala and began searching for the other suspects. During that process,
Mohlala managed to stand up and wrestled with Du Toit over the firearm.
Maria further told the court that she noticed what was happening,
took a knife and ran towards Mohlala where she stabbed him at the back.
According to her, Mohlala managed to disarm her, and then took the knife which
he used to stab both her and her husband.
After the ordeal, Mohlala took Du Toit’s firearm, cellphones and
fled the scene. Du Toit died at the scene as a result of his injuries his wife
Maria sustained serious injuries on her ear, and taken to hospital for medical
treatment.
Emanating from this incident, the police investigated a case of
house breaking with intend to rob, robbery with aggravating circumstances, as
well as murder.
A manhunt for the responsible person ensued and while the police
in Middelburg were still working tirelessly to solve the case, they received
information that somebody was shot in Pretoria and the suspect’s description
fit exactly the same with the suspect they were looking for.
Mohlala pleaded guilty before the Judge on Monday 27 October 2014,
said that he fled to Springs after the Pretoria
saga where his luck ran dry. It was there where he arrested for a theft case
and sentenced to four years effectively on the 15th of April 2014.
It then appeared that Mohlala wanted for murder cases in
Middelburg and Sekhukhune in Limpopo
respectively. Speaking about Limpopo, it came forth that Mohlala escaped from
the court where he was awaiting to be sentenced after he was found guilty for a
murder case he committed in 2007, in which he was already found guilty.
The arrest of Mohlala in Springs helped to solve both murder cases
wherein he firstly descended to Limpopo where
he was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment effectively.
On Monday, 27 October 2014, Mohlala pleaded guilty for the murder
he committed in Middelburg and sentenced as follows:
· 15 years for house breaking with intend to rob and robbery with
aggravating circumstances
· A life sentence for murder
The 15 years sentence will run concurrently with the murder sentence. He
was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
