Crime prevention during the holiday season

Crime prevention during the holiday season

I rise to deliver a member statement on behalf of the Democratic Alliance

We are nearing the end of the year. Soon citizens from all over South Africa will be visiting Mpumalanga for the Holiday season. While these visitors come to our province to relax and unwind after the year of hard work, there is an element of society eagerly awaiting the arrival of tourists. The holiday season is an open season for crime, because people are more relaxed. Crime knows no boundaries and everyone is at risk with criminals luring around each corner.

The latest robbery is of a holiday lodge was reported earlier this morning in Hazyview, which is a tourist destination for many people. According to the crime statistics between 2013/14 there were 181 reported robberies in Hazyview alone. The majority of these crimes happened during the festive season.

It is unfortunate that one of the biggest contributors to the rise in crimes during this season is unemployment. People are so desperate that they will do anything to stay alive.

The DA calls on the MEC of Safety and Security to ensure CPF’s are active, that visible policing increases and those active measures put into place to ensure that the crime is contained during this festive season.

We also appeal to the communities across the province to partner with the police in fighting the scourge of crime.

The DA will not rest until crime levels all over Mpumalanga have been contained.
