MINISTER DAVIES TO LAUNCH THE TOOLING CENTRE
OF EXCELLENCE IN GAUTENG
The Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr. Rob
Davies will launch the Intsimbi National Tooling Initiative (NTI) at the South
African Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa)) Skills Development Centre in
Pelindaba, Pretoria on Monday,
10 November 2014.
Minister Davies says the NTI is the
turn-around intervention programme aimed at the rehabilitation and growth of
the Tool, Die and Mould-making (TDM) sector. The sector has been identified by
the Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) as a key programme to
develop, market and showcase the niche competitive advantages and capabilities
of the South African manufacturing companies that operate within the TDM sector
both locally and globally.
“A key intervention programme of the NTI is
the development of a new sector-specific skills delivery system for the TDM
sector through partnerships with Further Education and Training Colleges ,
training institutions, and Universities of Technology in establishing Tooling
Centres of Excellence (TCOE) within the broader framework of Centres for
Advanced Manufacturing,” says Davies.
Davies says that these centres focused on the
development of new articulated, modular, industry relevant qualifications and
competency-based skills sets for artisans, technicians and engineers required
by the sector.
Davies explains that other focuses will be on
the development and linkage of applied research capacity aligned to regional
industry demands, specific technology and project support to Industry.
The NTI incorporated into the dti’s Industrial Policy
Action Plan (IPAP) as a key action programme for the manufacturing sector
development, beneficiation and job creation.
The launch held in partnership with the
National Tooling Initiative (NTI) and the South African Nuclear Energy
Corporation (Necsa).
