MEC DUMISILE NHLENGETHWA ENDORSE PARTICIPATION OF WOMEN IN CONSTRUCTION
INDUSTRY
Infrastructure and the construction industry
are key in the social and economic development of the province. The
construction industry creates the foundation of the province’s economy and the
basis for human advancement as it creates the much needed job opportunities for
the unemployed. It is against this light that the MEC for Public Works, Roads
and Transport, Dumisile Nhlengethwa hosted women in the construction industry
on Friday the 04th of September 2015 in Middelburg.
The discussions were aimed to enlighten women
within the sector on how to improve their business with government. In her
address to the audience, Ms Dumisile Nhlengethwa stressed the importance of
capacitation and network in the industry. “The construction industry is a very
competitive industry with systems, policies and procurement requirement
introduced timeously; hence you constantly need to gain knowledge. The
construction industry is not for the fainthearted and lazy people as you always
need to be in dirty overalls working on site,” she said. She concluded her
address by assuring the women that the department will provide all the
assistance to ensure that some projects are awarded to women.
Ms Nomshado Madonsela from Basadi Civil
Construction commended the Department for hosting the event. “We want to thank
the Department for making a meaningful contribution to the development of women
in the construction industry. The future is bright for women on the
construction industry in the province because of efforts made by government to
empower us,” she said. She advised other women in the industry to improve their
management of business.
Ms Madonsela is one of the success stories of
women empowerment in the construction industry, who according to the
Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) grading is at grade 9. This
means she can built major projects such as roads, social and health
Infrastructure.
