NEW SCHOOL WITHOUT BASIC COMMODITIES

NEW SCHOOL WITHOUT BASIC COMMODITIES
BY BRIAN KAJENGO
The DA is shocked to learn that schooling at Coronation Secondary School in Klarinet, Emalahleni, has yet to commence.
This brand new school opened its doors for the first time last Wednesday, but had to do so without essential basic services such as electricity and running water, as well as without Learner Teacher Support Materials, such as textbooks and stationeries.

The fact that an electricity account had not even been opened for the school is appalling, and demonstrates the Department of Education’ lack of planning and a callous attitude to the needs of learners. This situation is completely unacceptable and could have dire consequences for pupils.
Although more than 400 learners already registered at the school, the school experiences a severe staff shortage, with only four teachers and a principal. Although the department has promised staff transfers from other schools, this has yet to happen.
The DA will write to education MEC Reginah Mhaule demanding an urgent intervention, thus ensuring that the school becomes fully functional within the next few days.
“Should no action be taken, we will consider taking further steps, as the current status quo infringes on learners’ rights to basic education.” DA Mpumalanga warned.
