The DA welcomes the arrest of three suspected poachers in Hazyview during the festive period. The arrest follows after police acted on a tip-off from the local community.
The suspects, in a Toyota Tazz, found in possession of a .303 rifle and ammunition, hacksaw, axe, two butcher knives and binoculars, and held in police custody until their bail hearing. The weapons found typically used in poaching operations, and it is clear that the suspects intended to use it for illicit gains.
The DA believes that visible and proactive policing is vital in the fight against crime, and this is a perfect example of the results that achieved.
By working with local communities, police will not only improve the quality and veracity of crime intelligence, but will also improve their arrest statistics.
“The DA is grateful for the efforts of Hazyview station commander, Lt Col Patrick Makamu and his team for their proactive policing efforts these past few months, and we believe that these arrests have saved much of our precious wildlife resources, and made a significant contribution to the fight against crime in Hazyview,” said Willie Venter.
In many instances, different types of crime are related, and very rarely do criminals stick to one area of expertise, such as poaching.
Visible policing in areas with high instances of poaching may force criminals to shift their focus to house, lodge, business and other robberies. However, continued policing operations will either lead to further arrests, or force criminals to abandon their efforts.
